TRIDHARA

“TRIDHARA”- Three styles of Odissi dance through Tagore’s songs. Odissi exponent Rajib Bhattacharya, trained in three important styles of Odissi dance, ventures to pay tribute to three doyens through choreography based on Tagore’s songs. “TRIDHARA”- is the confluence of three rivers as they merge with the ocean .

Guru Pankaj Charan Das was the master of the Mahari style of Odissi dance, essentially the fIeld of specialization for the devadasis of the yesteryears. Mahari dance dedicates all presentations to Lord Jagannath through lasya (soft and delicate feminine aspect)centric movements and postures.

“Prathama adi taba shakti” is Tagore’s ode to the supreme being and the first dance of “Tridhara”, choreographed in the Mahari style.

“Esho shayamala sundara”-This song of Tagore invocates and celebrates monsoon .The legendary artist Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra was deeply influenced by nature while evolving his style of Odissi dance. The second item of “TRIDHARA”- has been choreographed according to his style.

Guru Debaprasad Das based his style largely an taandva (vigour and strength or male aspect)expressed thrugh rhythm and nuances of words and their sound (sabda swar pato). Tagore’s song “Bhango, baandh bhenge dao” is popular for its bold expressions and strong rhythmic patterns.

With this song in the background, a group of male dancers perform to showcase this style of Odissi dance.

“Vipula taranga re”,a brahmasangeet composed by Tagore is unique in its poetic expression of the marvels of creation. The rhythm and melody of the song convey a deep sense of admiration for creation as an event.

The conclusion item of “TRIDHARA”- is appropriately based on this song where the three styles of Odissi dance are explored simultaneously in all their Grandeur.

VISHNU VANDANA

This marks the entrance of the dancer on stage in the Odissi style. The dancer invokes the blessings of Lord Jagannath for an auspicious beginning. Then the dancer offers salutation the mother earth, the teacher, the accompanist and to the audience. Then follows a prayer to Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Being.I bow to Lord Vishnu, the master of the universe, who is ever peaceful, who reclines on the great serpent bed, from whose navel springs the lotus of the creative power, who supports the entire universe, who is all pervading as the sky, who is dark like the clouds and has a beautiful form;  the lord of Laxmi, the lotus-eyed one, whom the Yogis are able to perceive through meditation, He, who is the destroyer of Samsar.
